SEGA CEO Admits Sonic Boom Was A Disaster
SEGA CEO Haruki Satomi has said that the Wii U game Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was the biggest low point for the Sonic franchise.
In an interview with the Japanese news site The Nikkei, Satomi said the game was panned by critics and probably by fans too. The series had almost lost its credibility and reputation around the time the Sonic Boom titles were in development.
Satomi said the company tried to correct course afterward. The developers they connected with were huge Sonic fans, and they proposed a brand new 2D Sonic game, which became Sonic Mania.

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was released in 2014 for the Wii U and received a Metascore of around 30 out of 100 on Metacritic. Sonic Mania came out in 2017 and received a rating of 86 on Metacritic. Satomi said:
We haven't always been successful with our IPs.
