Nintendo Not Giving Up On New Forms Of Play, Says President
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said the company has not reduced its focus on creating new forms of play. He said this during a financial results question and answer session, when he was asked whether that priority had declined.
The question came up because Nintendo has not released anything as revolutionary as the Wii in recent years. Furukawa's answer was that the focus has not changed, and that the company's approach of building hardware and software together is still how it works.
Furukawa said the company's approach is to combine hardware and software development, and that this is the best way to use Nintendo's strengths. He also said that offering entertainment only Nintendo can provide is central to the business, and that the company will keep prioritising it.
Shinya Takahashi, who works on the development side, said hardware and software teams work together to create new kinds of play. He said Nintendo starts with an engaging gameplay idea, then works out what hardware features are needed to make it happen. He added that the company is currently working through that process for the successor to the Nintendo Switch, and that more details will come later.
Ko Shiota, who has been with the company for a long time, said the habit of hardware and software developers sharing ideas and testing repeatedly has long been part of Nintendo's culture.
Providing unique entertainment—the kind only Nintendo can offer—is our company's lifeblood.
