Nintendo Talks Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Remake, Recreated Everything From Scratch

Nintendo's developers have spoken more about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, and they have confirmed that everything in it was rebuilt from scratch.

Many remakes start from the original version as a base, but Nintendo chose not to do that here. The company felt that made the most sense, since nearly three decades have passed since the original game launched.

Director HokWai Ng and program director Hiroki Taguchi talked about the approach in an interview. Taguchi explained that a common method is to port the original code and data, then build updates on top of it. Because 28 years had passed since the original release, the team instead rebuilt each feature and compared it against the original, repeating that process again and again. They also paid close attention to the feel of actions like movement, and they adjusted things so players who have come from Breath of the Wild onward won't find the adventure jarring.

Ng, series producer Eiji Aonuma and art director Aya Shida also talked about removing auto-jump. In the original, jumping happened automatically at set spots when you pushed the Control Stick forward. The remake instead carries over the controls from recent Zelda games, so you can jump anywhere with a single button press. Aonuma said that makes exploration more exciting, but it also means the team has to plan for all kinds of player behavior and adjust the environment to match.

Shida added that Adult Link and Young Link can jump different distances, which made it hard to design gaps that work for both.
