Final Fantasy Resonance Producer Talks About Its Origins

Final Fantasy Resonance producer Keisuke Nakashima has spoken about how the game came together, including an original idea that Square Enix did not first favour.

The game is based on the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but it has changed in several ways, including the HD-2D art style. Nakashima made a pitch at the end of 2020 to turn Brave Exvius into a full turn-based RPG for consoles, without the mobile gacha mechanics. The team behind it started in a different place than the finished game.

Bloomberg reports that initially there was some resistance from Square Enix executives, who were more interested in a simple port. A port would have been cheaper and needed a shorter development cycle. Nakashima did not want to take that route and pushed for an original console version. Nakashima also said the gacha elements were a reason for the console version. He said:

It was really disappointing to hear people didn't want to play it just because of the gacha elements.
