Nintendo Explains Why It Remade Zelda: Ocarina Of Time For Switch 2

Nintendo has explained why it decided to remake The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2. The company's series producer, Eiji Aonuma, spoke about the reasoning in a new interview.

The original game came out long ago and was later re-released on Nintendo 3DS, but that version kept the original presentation. This remake rebuilds the game fully for Switch 2, and Aonuma linked the project to the series' 40th anniversary.

Aonuma said many of the people working on Zelda games today have only worked on the more recent titles. He wondered whether they truly understand how important Ocarina of Time is to the series as a whole, and how they would interpret it when developing future games.

Rebuilding the game as a full remake could give the team new insights they can carry into future development. Aonuma said that would be valuable, and that he thought now was the right time to revisit the game.

There was another reason too. Nintendo wanted players who are used to Breath of the Wild, where you can freely choose your own path from the start, to experience the more paced, story-driven style of the older games. Aonuma said:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was later re-released on Nintendo 3DS.

The game launches this Thursday, November 5. Nintendo has also released a "What's New" trailer for the Switch 2 remake.
