Final Fantasy 7 Remake Director Says Story Wasn't Shaped By Player Reactions

Final Fantasy 7 Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi has shared more about the story as the series heads toward its finale next year.

The main point is that the team kept to a story it had planned from the start. Between the releases of Remake, Rebirth and Revelation there was time for player opinion to pull things in another direction, but Hamaguchi says that never happened.

Hamaguchi told EDGE that the full arc of the narrative was mapped out at the very beginning of the project. The details were filled in as each game went into development. Hamaguchi said:

We haven't altered the core of the story based on reactions at any given time.

He also said that avoiding a personal fan project was essential to him. The bigger challenge, he explained, was asking whether the team's work could honestly be called Final Fantasy 7, not just adding changes or fresh takes.

Hamaguchi also said that having the original creators around let him move the story forward by discussing and confirming details with them. Remake and Rebirth are out now on Nintendo Switch 2, and Revelation concludes the trilogy in April. Hamaguchi previously spoke about the Switch 2 version of Revelation
